ODM development — your own model, built on hardware that already ships

For Amazon sellers, brand owners, distributors and product teams with a gap in their range: a different enclosure, a different port set or a function the catalogue does not cover — engineered on top of a platform already in volume production. NRE quoted before you commit, samples in your hands before a production slot is booked.

To Amazon sellers, brand owners, distributors and product teams,

Tittron invites you to bring us a product that does not exist yet — or one that exists, but looks exactly like everybody else's. It can be as light as an existing board in a housing nobody else offers, or as heavy as a function no current model performs. Either way the path is the same: feasibility first, NRE and tooling quoted before you commit, then samples you can hold before a production slot is booked.

Most ODM enquiries are not inventions. They are a listing that needs to stop looking identical to the competition, a housing that fits a rack, a port layout a channel keeps asking for, or packaging that arrives FBA-ready instead of being reworked at a prep centre. Because the electronics, firmware, tooling, certification files and packaging all sit inside one organisation, those changes can be engineered, quoted and built without assembling a supply chain from scratch.

Send us the problem the product has to solve — a competitor link, a drawing, a target cost, or simply the job description. You will get back feasibility, the NRE figure and the date of the first sample.

What an ODM programme actually solves

An ODM programme is the answer when customising an existing model is not enough. Instead of choosing from what we already build, you define the outcome — a different enclosure, a different port set, a function the catalogue does not cover — and we engineer towards it on top of platforms already in production.

That distinction is what makes the economics work. Starting from a proven board and a proven firmware base keeps the engineering risk in a known place: the new work is the housing, the port layout and the function layer, not a full electronics design from zero. It is why a first sample can arrive in weeks rather than quarters, why the NRE figure can be quoted up front instead of growing, and why a developed model can start at around 500 units rather than a container-load.

You own what you pay for. Tooling is yours and is stated as yours in the quotation. The industrial design and the specification are yours. The underlying platform IP stays with the factory — which is precisely what keeps the engineering cost down.

The six gates from brief to mass production

Nothing is built in quantity until you have held a sample and signed it off.

  1. 01

    Brief and feasibility

Send the job the product has to do, the volumes, the target cost and the markets it must sell into. We map it against the platforms already in production and say plainly which parts already exist and which have to be developed.

    • A competitor link, a drawing, a specification sheet or a paragraph of requirements is enough to start
    • We name the closest existing platform, so the scope of genuinely new work is visible on day one
    • Feasibility comes back with a first view on NRE, unit price, lead time and certification path
  2. 02

    NRE and tooling quotation

Engineering hours, tooling, moulds, fixtures and test jigs are quoted as one NRE figure before anything is built, with the unit price at three volume bands beside it. You see what the programme costs to start and what it costs to run.

    • One NRE line covering design, tooling, samples and test
    • Unit price quoted at 500, 2,000 and 10,000 pieces, so scaling is visible before you commit
    • Tooling ownership stated in writing on the quotation
  3. 03

    Industrial design and enclosure

Housing geometry, material, finish, colour and port layout are drawn and rendered for approval. Where the change is mechanical only, this is the whole of the new engineering work.

    • 3D renders and dimensioned drawings for sign-off
    • Material and finish options, including recycled ABS and aluminium where the programme needs it
    • Desktop, in-line, wall-mount and rack form factors
  4. 04

    Engineering sample (EVT)

The first physical units are built on soft tooling or machined housings, so you can judge the mechanical fit, the port layout and the basic function in your own environment — with your own hosts, monitors and software.

    • Typically three to five units
    • Shipped with a build report listing what is final and what still changes
    • A failed EVT is a normal outcome, not a problem: we issue a change list and re-sample
  5. 05

    Design validation and certification (DVT)

Samples from production tooling go through electrical, thermal and reliability testing, while the certification files for your target markets are prepared in parallel rather than afterwards.

    • EMC, safety, thermal and drop testing against the markets you named
    • CE, FCC, UKCA, RoHS and REACH files prepared on the validated build
    • Firmware frozen to a released version before the certification build
  6. 06

Tooling release, packaging and mass production

Production tooling is released only after DVT passes against criteria agreed before the build. Packaging, labelling and documentation are produced in the same plant, so the first production order ships finished and ready for your channel.

    • Retail or mailer carton, insert, manual and label artwork handled in-house
    • FBA-ready packing: polybag, barcode, carton and master carton specification to your requirements
    • DDP into the EU and the US, or ex-works to your own forwarder

What we can change for you

Most programmes use two or three of these. The feasibility note tells you which ones yours needs.

Enclosure and form factor

A housing nobody else in the category offers: new geometry, material, finish and colour, drawn and rendered for approval before tooling is cut.

Port layout

The port mix your channel keeps asking for — a second USB-C, a different HDMI count, a legacy port retained — engineered onto a board that already ships.

Function layer

Firmware behaviour and a function the catalogue does not cover: switching logic, EDID handling, power rules, LED behaviour, a mode that does not exist today.

Board re-spin when it is genuinely needed

Where the outcome cannot be reached on an existing board, we say so in the feasibility note and quote the re-spin as part of the NRE rather than discovering it later.

Packaging and documentation

Carton, sleeve, insert, manual and label artwork produced in the same plant, so the first production order ships finished instead of waiting on a print queue.

Certification for your markets

Test reports and market files prepared on the validated build, carrying over everything that already exists for the underlying platform.

Three ways programmes usually start

The lighter the start, the lower the NRE and the shorter the route to a sample.

Existing platform, new housing

The fastest route and the cheapest NRE. The electronics are proven; the new work is the enclosure, the colour and the port layout. This is what most own-brand and marketplace programmes actually need.

New port set or function

A function the catalogue does not cover — a different port mix, a switching behaviour, a firmware mode — added on top of a proven board.

Ground-up module

Where neither gets you there: a new board developed inside the group, quoted as a single NRE figure with the same six gates and the same sample discipline.

Who this invitation is for

If you see yourself in one of these, the rest of this page is written for you.

Amazon and marketplace sellers

Your listing looks identical to five competitors because you are all selling the same housing. You want a model that is visibly yours, packaging that arrives FBA-ready, and a first PO you can actually finance — not a 5,000-unit minimum.

Brand sellers building a range

You own a brand and a channel, and you want the hardware to look like it belongs to it: one enclosure language across several models, your colour, your port mix, your packaging — and a model competitors cannot simply re-order.

Distributors and channel owners

You already move volume and want a line that is yours, without hiring an engineering organisation to get it: local certification, manuals in the language of your market, and regional exclusivity written into the programme.

Product teams with a functional gap

A port mix, a mounting format or a behaviour that no catalogue model performs, and enough volume to justify developing it — engineered on a proven board rather than from zero.

What those buyers hit

Eight situations we are asked to fix — and the short answer to each.

Every listing in the category looks the same

Amazon and marketplace sellers

The problemYou, your competitors and three private labels are photographing the same housing, so the only lever left is price.

How we solve itA new enclosure and port layout built on a board that already ships — a listing image that is unmistakably yours.

What that means in practice: The industrial design is yours, and the model can be held for your channel.

Quoted 5,000 units for a first purchase order

First launch, testing a category

The problemThe factory will only tool up at a volume your first PO cannot absorb, so the programme dies before the first unit.

How we solve itFrom around 500 pieces for a developed model; 1,000 where new tooling has to be amortised.

What that means in practice: Below that we will say so and point you at OEM customisation instead — it usually gets the same shelf result for a fraction of the NRE.

The NRE figure grows after you sign

Anyone who has run a development before

The problemThe quote covers the obvious work; the rest arrives as change orders once the programme is too far in to stop.

How we solve itOne NRE figure covering design, tooling, samples and test, quoted before kick-off.

What that means in practice: The feasibility note states which parts already exist — that is what makes the number trustworthy.

The sample arrives after the launch window

Sellers working to a season or a promotion

The problemDevelopment runs in quarters, so the product lands after the date it was planned for.

How we solve itEVT units typically 4–8 weeks from kick-off, because the electronics already exist.

What that means in practice: You test in your own setup, with your own hosts and software, before tooling is released.

Packaging is not FBA-ready

Amazon sellers

The problemCartons arrive wrong-sized, barcodes are rejected, and units get reworked at a prep centre at your cost.

How we solve itCarton, polybag, barcode, labelling and master-carton specification produced with the hardware, in the same plant.

What that means in practice: Barcode and compliance marks checked per market before the run, not at the warehouse door.

The marketplace asks for certification you do not have

New listings, new regions

The problemA listing is blocked, or a customs entry stalls, because the compliance file does not exist for that market.

How we solve itCE, FCC, UKCA, RoHS and REACH files prepared on the validated build, in parallel with DVT.

What that means in practice: Existing platform test reports carry over, so certification is an update rather than a start from zero.

Nobody can tell you who owns the tooling

Brand sellers investing in NRE

The problemYou pay for tooling and later discover you cannot move the programme, or that the design is not yours.

How we solve itTooling you paid for is yours and is stated as yours in the quotation; the industrial design and specification are yours.

What that means in practice: Tooling is held and maintained at the plant at no charge while the programme runs.

Your model turns up under somebody else's brand

Brand sellers and distributors

The problemThe development you funded is listed by another seller six months later, at a lower price.

How we solve itA developed enclosure is naturally yours to hold; where electronics are shared we agree channel or regional exclusivity.

What that means in practice: Exclusivity terms are written into the programme, usually against a volume commitment.

By the numbers

The four figures that decide whether an ODM programme is worth starting — minimum, NRE, approvals and time to first sample.

From ~500 units

A developed model at a quantity a first purchase order or a first retail listing can absorb — not a container-load and not a 5,000-piece tooling commitment.

One NRE figure, up front

Design, tooling, samples and test quoted as a single number before kick-off, typically 50% at kick-off and 50% at EVT delivery.

Two gates before tooling

EVT units you can hold and test, then DVT units from production tooling against criteria agreed before the build. Tooling is not released until DVT passes.

4–8 weeks to first sample

What it takes to get physical EVT units into your hands, because the electronics and firmware already exist and only the new layer is engineered.

The resources behind it

These sit inside the same organisation — which is why a programme can be quoted, built, certified and shipped as one piece of work.

In-house engineering

Mechanical, electronics and firmware engineers on the same site as the production lines, so a design change does not cross a company boundary to be resolved.

Tooling and injection capacity

Mould design, mould making and injection moulding inside the group — which is why tooling lead times are quoted in weeks and tooling stays maintained between runs.

Certification library

Existing test reports, component certifications and market files that carry over to a developed model, so certification is an update rather than a start from zero.

Production, packaging and logistics

Once released, the model enters the same production, inspection, packaging and shipping system that handles the catalogue — including FBA-ready packing and DDP into the EU and the US.

What buyers ask first

I sell on Amazon — is an ODM programme realistic at my volume?

It is, from around 500 pieces. Most marketplace programmes are an existing board in a housing nobody else offers, which is the cheapest NRE and the shortest route to a sample. If your first PO is smaller than that, OEM customisation of an existing model — colour, port layout, silk-screen, your carton — usually delivers the same listing result for a fraction of the development cost, and we will tell you so rather than sell you the bigger programme.

Can you make the packaging FBA-ready?

Yes. Carton, polybag, barcode, labelling and master-carton specification are produced in the same plant as the hardware, so the first production order ships ready for your channel rather than being reworked at a prep centre. Barcodes and compliance marks are checked against the market you are listing in before the run.

How much of an ODM programme is genuinely new?

Usually less than people expect. Most programmes start from a platform already in volume production, so the new work is the enclosure, the port layout and the function layer. The feasibility note states exactly which parts already exist — that note is what makes both the NRE figure and the lead time trustworthy.

Do I own the tooling and the design?

Yes. Tooling paid for by the programme is yours and is stated as yours in the quotation. The industrial design and the specification are yours; the underlying platform IP stays with the factory, which is what keeps the engineering cost down.

Can the model be exclusive to us?

It can. A developed enclosure with your industrial design is naturally yours to hold, and for models where the electronics are shared we discuss channel or regional exclusivity as part of the programme terms, usually against a volume commitment.

What happens if the sample fails our testing?

The EVT build exists to be tested in your environment, and a failed EVT is a normal outcome rather than a problem. We issue a change list, rebuild and re-sample. Production tooling is not released until DVT units pass against criteria agreed before the build.

How long from brief to a first production order?

Feasibility in three working days, full quotation within ten, EVT units typically 4–8 weeks from kick-off, and certification prepared in parallel with DVT rather than after it. The exact dates for your programme are stated in the quotation.
